Twelve-year-old Wren Davies thinks life couldn't get any worse since her brother moved away to college, leaving her only with the companionship of the two dogs she diligently watches. Little does she know that a sinister force is coming for her, rising from the ashes of a burnt-out home nestled in the nearby woods. As the November chill settles in, Wren must fight for her life against a force as harsh as winter itself, in a tale that stretches across the globe and through many generations of people unlucky enough to cross paths with the being known as the Bone Witch. The Bone Witch is approximately 48,000 words long so it would run around 170 pages printed. The target audience is age 10 to adult.

The Bone Witch Jason Asala 9780974722825 Books Reviews

Loved this book! I did not want to put it down -- draws the reader in and makes one feel as if the story is being experienced first hand.
This is a great book. It is hard to put down with the author's great ability to provide details it makes you feel like you are right there with Wren Davies in the woods.
Jason Asala is a wonderful storyteller. I loved the way he built the suspense of the story by going back and forth between two different times and places.
Enjoyed reading Bone Witch so much, on my , that I just ordered it, in book form, for my grand-kids. I read the book in two evenings, couldn't put it down. Jason's writing kept me glued to the pages.
I recommend Bone Witch to young readers, Middle School and older. Not blood chilling scary but will keep their interest for sure. I Looking forward to the next one.
I first got to know Jason's work when I met him years ago at a comic book convention in Chicago. I picked up a handful of issues of his 'Poe' comic book. It was fantastic! A year or two later I ran in to him again and saw that he had self published a young adult novel called "The Great Wormwood". It was amazing! I was disappointed when a sequel never came out, but this is his first book in print since Wormwood and I was thrilled to read it. The story follows a girl who gets caught up in some strange events going on in a burned down house in the deep woods where she walks the dogs every day. Its a bit of a mystery that unfolds, so I think it might be bad form to give away any more than that.
Let me just finish with saying that I eagerly await his next book, whatever it may be about!
I was excited to see this book on , as I loved the authors work on his independent comics "Poe" and "Nantucket Brown Roasters". I have to say that I couldn't put the book down and ended up reading it in one sitting as we drove from upper Michigan to Chicago. The way it wound ancient folk tales into a modern setting reminded me of some of the novels of one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman.

I'm hoping to get my teenage sons to read it as I think they will love it too! My only disappointment is that is was over way too soon (although its a great length for YA)

BTW, This would make a great movie!
A friend of a friend is the author, and our friend in common posted a link to The Bone Witch on his Facebook page. The title sounded good, and it was only $.99, so I thought, what the heck. I loved this book! The protagonist is a 12-year-old girl, but at 50, I was still sucked right in. I had a hard time stopping for things like work or sleep. I loved the way the author alternated chapters from the traditional folk tale to the set-in-the-present story of Wren Davies. I have a bit of Russian in my genealogy, so I think this may have brought an added bit of fascination for me. It also made me think of the classical music "Pictures at an Exibition", because some elements of this story are represented in Mussorgsky's composition. Like the other reviewers, I was sorry to see the book end, but that is not to say that it was incomplete in any way - the author nicely tied up some loose ends. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
I first, jokingly, reviewed this book personally to the author when I was half way though as, "I've read worse." I mean come on... I didn't want him to get a big head, and I hadn't read the finish yet. He took it as intended and gave me an extremely sarcastic "Oh, Thanks....." Now, having finished I can truthfully elaborate and honestly state that "I've ENJOYED worse" -). That should be a safe upgrade right? You know, in case he reads this.

Joking aside, being the moderately voracious reader I am, I feel very safe in recommending this title to readers of any age and fans of any genre or gender. Though the target audience is pointed at young adult, don't let that scare you. We were all kids once, and the author magically is able to channel the life and dreams of the 12 year old Wren Davies, for all of us to BELIEVABLY experience. Being the father of a 10 year old daughter myself, I was mildly shocked at how well the author developed his main character. It was a short but sweet novel that leaves me anxiously awaiting the next en devour.

Thanks for the great read.

P.S. I'll never look at a chicken the same way again, though I always thought they were a little creepy!
